Honeycomb Lead Oil-Primed

Artefex Honeycomb Panel is a professional artist panel for oil painting with lead white oil priming on a two-sided aluminum composite panel, consisting of two aluminum sheets laminated to both sides of a black polyethylene core. This panel is 6mm thick and is available in sizes from 24 x 24 to 48 x 96 inches.

The panel is a lightweight but rigid and durable aluminum composite material (ACM)—two strong sheets of .040″ aluminum bonded to a corrugated polyethylene core. The panel is coated on both sides with a white polyester finish. This weather-resistant panel is ideal for a wide range of paint mediums including these:

  • Oil
  • Oil-alkyd
  • Oil-resin

Artefex Honeycomb Panels offer a superior support for painting compared to wood panels because Honeycomb panels have very low response to environmental changes, such as relative humidity (RH) and temperature. Lightweight, resistant to relative humidity and easy to store makes them ideal for working large!

Lead White Oil-Primed

Artefex Lead White Oil-Primed ACM Art Panels are primed with lead white and titanium white oil priming. The lead white provides best resistance to the environment from changes in relative humidity (RH) and the titanium white the greatest opacity and brightest white. This type of primer does not absorb water readily and is especially suitable for oil, oil-resin and oil-alkyd paint. Oil priming requires a more complex process than acrylic (universal) priming and needs the utmost care and attention to produce a quality surface for painting. Two coats of oil priming are applied, then dried in low temperature ovens where the temperature and humidity are maintained at constant levels to achieve an optimal final result. The brightness and tone of oil colors are brought out by this special kind of preparation. The brushstroke is both fluent and well defined on this type of priming.

We use 3mm thick ACM panels to provide the most durable, rigid, and long-lasting support for your art. ACM panels do not react to relative humidity and other environmental changes, providing a very stable support for artwork. For larger sizes up to 5ft by 10ft we use a 6mm thick Gridpanel.

We cut Artefex ACM panels to standard sizes but we also cut custom panels in any shape or size you don’t see above.

Finally we inspect and stamp every panel before sending it to you. This stamp represents an insurance policy not just for artists but for collectors. Your artwork is safe on an Artefex panel for generations.

FAQs

The basic rule is that you can paint with oils on Acryclic grounds but you can’t paint with Acrylics on an Oil ground.

We recommend you varnish all oil paintings. It is important to to wait at least 6 months before varnishing, as it takes at least that long for oil paintings to dry. If you varnish, you will protect your art from the back and the front, ensuring your artwork has the best chance to stand the test of time.

We do not recommend painting directly on unprimed aluminum. Think of your aluminum panels as the stretcher bars on traditional stretched canvas. Its what supports the surface you paint on, not the painting surface itself.

3mm ACM Panels are rigid up to 24 inches but are less rigid at larger sizes making them ideal for smaller art works. 4mm Copper Panels are rigid up to 36 Inches but can be made as large as 48×96 inches. 6mm Honeycomb panels are very rigid at even the largest sizes. In addition they are 60% lighter than a 3mm panel making them ideal for extra large works of art. Gallery panels are made with 3mm panels. Their unique design reinforces the panels in a way that makes them very rigid even at extra large sizes!

3mm panel weighs 2.85grams/square inch (0.1 oz) 4mm panel weighs 4.9 grams/ square inch (0.17 oz) 6mm Honeycomb panel weighs 1.71 grams/square inch (0.06 oz), Gallery panel weighs weighs 3.6 grams/square inch (3.7 oz) Even the copper panels are relatively light. The lightest, 6mm honeycomb panels are by far the lightest panels standing at 19lbs for a huge 4’x8′ panel!
