Christopher Remmers
About the Artist
Christopher Remmers, born 1982, is an American painter based in the Pacific Northwest. His works focus on Classical Realism and methodology with a strong proclivity toward large scale, imaginative subjects. Symbolism and allegory tend to permeate his works, imbuing his canvases with a sense of modern mystery.
He has received extensive instruction initially with California-based artist Virgil Elliot, author of “Traditional Oil Painting”, and then at Georgetown Atelier under the guidance of master instructor Tenaya Sims, where Remmers now also teaches.
He has been exhibited through 33 Contemporary in Chicago, Abend Gallery in Denver, Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles among other venues and has been a main show artist at the IX Arts Symposium for 3 years running as well as a five-time finalist in the largest competition in the world for 21st Century Representational Art, the International Art Renewal Center (ARC) Salon Competition, with his painting of “Zain” winning third place in the 15th International ARC Salon in the Imaginative Realism Category.
This same work exhibited at Sotheby’s NY in July of 2021 where it sold in the auction “Contemporary Realism: Important 21st Century Works”. His works have been published in prominent US magazines such as “Fine Art Connoisseur” and “American Art Collector”, as well as in the Parisian magazines, “Apollo Art”, “Beaux Arts” and “L’oeil”. He was featured on Artefex as the artist of the month this past April and has been published in other numerous publications. His work can be found in private collections around the world from France to New York and he produced a series of large-scale commissions which were shown in Versailles in the fall of 2021.
Christopher’s Favorite Artefex Panels
“My personal favorite surface is the Artefex Allinpanel. From years of prepping and making my own panels, various work like priming and sanding can take a lot of time. When you want to get busy painting it’s nice to have something that’s ready to go. What I love about the Artefex panels is that they can come already primed and are available in different surface textures from fine to extra-fine and medium. They’re super lightweight, easy to frame, and nearly indestructible.”
“Awe is the gateway. A phrase that I have been attempting to live into for some time now, through my art and how I encourage other creatives to engage. Awe because that is where we are the most open to creating meaning in our lives and where the most significant transformation can occur in our view of the world and how we relate to it.
What a strange thing it is to be pushing pigments of paint around on a canvas in this day and age whilst we sit on the back of a technological rocket aiming toward who knows. But there is something both fascinating and deeply fulfilling about the tradition of oil painting and craftsmanship as a vehicle for self-discovery. The tangible quality of pigments colliding with light and form gives a timeless and alive experience, a beautiful capture of an emotional quality transferred through incredibly simple tools.
My work is blending classical realism with mythological narratives to capture a moment of transcendence. Figures and symbols often dance in the liminal spaces between abstraction and the surreal. I aim to create representations of the divine much like the tarot and the titans of classical realist works found in cathedrals, temples, and sacred sites worldwide.”
