Artefex Copper Artist Panels

Renowned for their exceptional quality and versatility, these panels offer artists a unnique surface that elevates their work to new heights. Crafted from premium copper, we meticulously prepare each panel to deliver a smooth and polished finish, making them the ideal support for fine detail oil painting.

Copper Art Panel Features

  1. Premium Copper Construction: We craft our panels from high-quality copper, renowned for its outstanding durability and resistance to corrosion. We design each panel to withstand environmental changes, ensuring your artwork remains intact for generations. When varnished, copper can become one of the most durable painting surfaces.
  2. Panel Composition: Additionally, we deoxidize commercially pure copper with phosphorus to maintain a relatively high content of this element. This alloy is not susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. The conductivity of this copper alloy is relatively low due to the high phosphorus content. The chemical composition of phosphorus-deoxidized, high residual phosphorus copper alloy (Cu-DHP) is a minimum of 99.85% copper (Cu) and 0.013 to 0.050% phosphorus (P). This alloy is classified as Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) C1220 and American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) C12200.2) – 3003 aluminum alloy, an aluminum-manganese alloy, is a general-purpose alloy with moderate strength, good workability, and good corrosion resistance. Manufacturers commonly roll and extrude it. They also use it frequently in sheet metal applications such as gutters, downspouts, roofing, and siding. The chemical composition of 3003 aluminum alloy is:
    Aluminum: 96.8 to 99%
    Copper: 0.05 to 0.20%
    Iron: 0.70% max
    Manganese: 1.0 to 1.5%
    Silicon: 0.6% max
    Zinc: 0.1% max
  3. Smooth and Polished Surface: The unique copper panel allows for detailed brushwork, providing artists with a medium that supports intricate designs and vibrant, lasting colors.
  4. Archival Quality: Artefex Copper Artist Panels are engineered to provide an archival-quality foundation, preserving the integrity of your artwork over time. The copper naturally prevents the growth of bacteria and mold, maintaining the original appearance of your creation. We have thousands of examples of copper paintings. These paintings have lasted for generations and you can find examples in most museums.
  5. Versatility in Mediums: Whether you prefer oils, acrylics, or mixed media, these panels accommodate a wide range of techniques. The non-absorbent surface ensures that your paints retain their true colors and textures.
  6. Historical Significance: Copper has been used by artists for centuries, valued for its durability and unique aesthetic qualities. Artefex Copper Artist Panels continue this tradition, offering a modern take on an age-old painting surface.

FAQ’s

Can I paint with oils on an Acrylic Ground?

The basic rule is that you can paint with oils on Acryclic grounds but you can’t paint with Acrylics on an Oil ground.

Do I have to varnish my oil paintings when working on these panels?

We recommend you varnish all oil paintings. It is important to to wait at least 6 months before varnishing, as it takes at least that long for oil paintings to dry. If you varnish, you will protect your art from the back and the front, ensuring your artwork has the best chance to stand the test of time.

Can I just paint directly on Aluminum?

We do not recommend painting directly on unprimed aluminum. Think of your aluminum panels as the stretcher bars on traditional stretched canvas. Its what supports the surface you paint on, not the painting surface itself.

Are the panels rigid at large sizes?

3mm ACM Panels are rigid up to 24 inches but are less rigid at larger sizes making them ideal for smaller art works. 4mm Copper Panels are rigid up to 36 Inches but can be made as large as 48×96 inches. 6mm Honeycomb panels are very rigid at even the largest sizes. In addition they are 60% lighter than a 3mm panel making them ideal for extra large works of art. Gallery panels are made with 3mm panels. Their unique design reinforces the panels in a way that makes them very rigid even at extra large sizes!

Do these panels get heavy at larger sizes?

3mm panel weighs 2.85grams/square inch (0.1 oz) 4mm panel weighs 4.9 grams/ square inch (0.17 oz) 6mm Honeycomb panel weighs 1.71 grams/square inch (0.06 oz), Gallery panel weighs weighs 3.6 grams/square inch (3.7 oz) Even the copper panels are relatively light. The lightest, 6mm honeycomb panels are by far the lightest panels standing at 19lbs for a huge 4’x8′ panel!

How do you hang or frame these panels?

There is a wide range of ways of presenting your artwork. Most commonly artist frame these panels. Though that is the most common presentation we offer a couple other options. Below you will find two hanging systems that we offer, C channel hanging system and the click on hanging system. Both are great for, the 3mm, 4mm and 6mm panels. The gallery panel comes with its own hanging system that you can hang on a wire.

Yes! in fact just send us a picture of what you need and we will see what we can do? We have made everything from arches to giant hand made cutouts.

Yes we have tackled some very unique projects. Contact us and see what is possible!

Do custom panels take longer to manufacture?

Yes we typically add at least a week to production with any custom shape.

Is it hard or expensive to ship these panels?

These panels are very thin and light, making them easy and inexpensive to ship. Keep in mind that shipping one of these panels is the same as shipping ten, so bundling can greatly reduce the per panel shipping cost.

Are these easy to store in my studio?

These panels, can fit in the tightest spaces in your studio. Being rigid, light weigh and very thin allows them to be stored in the most out of the way areas of your studio without being worried of ripping you canvas!

Can i buy a panel larger than 5'x10'?

    Beautiful panel

My panel was 11×14, not 18×24.. but the panel was great( although I did notice more small indentations than the 1st panel I bought). The copper color looks like it has a rose gold tint which is a beautiful look on any piece.
