"I switched to Artefex because I needed consistency panel to panel. Now I don't even think about my substrate—I just paint. That's exactly how it should be."

Frequently Asked Questions

Artefex offers several distinct lines tailored for oil painters. The Oleopanel is designed for "Classical Oil Painting with Archival Quality," featuring a Rublev lead white oil priming. The Allinpanel offers a traditional feel with "100% linen canvas oil-primed in Italy". Additionally, the Artefex Copper Artist Panel is a professional support specifically listed for "oil painting," prized for its unique interaction with oil pigments.
The Oleopanel (Lead Oil) comes in two specific textures to suit different painting styles. The Smooth (411) finish is ideal for high-detail work where a slicker surface is desired to push paint around, while the Eggshell (410) finish offers slightly more tooth for building up layers. Both options feature professional Rublev lead white oil priming chemically bonded to the aluminum composite panel, creating a surface that supports the richness of oil paints while preserving the integrity of every layer.
The Artefex Copper Artist Panel offers a superior support compared to wood because it has a "very low response to environmental changes, such as relative humidity (RH) and temperature". This stability prevents the expansion and contraction that often cracks oil paint on organic supports. Furthermore, painting on copper is known for creating "luminous effects," making it a unique choice for professional oil artists seeking a distinctive look.
The Allinpanel combines the classic texture of linen with the archival rigidity of aluminum. Artefex uses 100% linen canvas that is oil-primed in Italy and adheres it to the panel using BEVA 371 film. BEVA 371 is a conservation-grade adhesive that ensures a permanent bond without bubbling, protecting the linen from the "puncture, tearing and distortion" common with unsupported canvases. This ensures the artwork will "never sag or crack".
No. One of the primary benefits of using Artefex panels is convenience without sacrificing quality. Whether you choose the lead-primed Oleopanel, the oil-primed Allinpanel, or the acrylic-primed Alcotpanel (which is also suitable for oils), the surfaces arrive primed to perfection and ready for immediate use. This saves artists the significant time usually spent prepping raw materials, allowing you to focus entirely on the creative process.
