Description

Copper Rinse is a corrosion inhibiting solution containing Benzotriazole (BTA) that has been proven to be an effective corrosion inhibitor for copper and bronze.

Corrosion inhibitors for copper and copper alloys are applied directly to the metal to prevent corrosion in changing environments. Different environments require different amounts of inhibitors, so it cannot be determined to what extent the inhibitor will prevent corrosion, but it has proven to be effective to inhibit or control corrosion.

How to Use

Clean the surface of the metal well before applying Rublev Colours Copper Rinse. Allow to dry completely before applying. Spray Copper Rinse evenly over the entire surface, and allow to dry. It will leave a slight haze on the metal surface. Alternatively, spray Copper Rinse and then swab with a cotton ball, and allow to dry completely. This removes any haze, but deposits less inhibitor on the surface. To remove the inhibitor, simply wipe with a cotton swab wetted with alcohol.

How it Works

Even as copper leaves the foundry, its surface has already started to corrode. Corrosion is due to the interaction between the metal and its environment, initially leading to an oxide layer on the metal. Copper oxides, carbonates and chlorides are the most commonly found corrosion compounds on the surface of copper and copper alloys. To a degree, these corrosion products are usually stable with respect to the environment. The stability of corrosion products depends on the environment of the object. Stable patina (noble patina) are normally found to be resistant to fluctuations in relative humidity. Some corrosion products develop unstable patina, also called “Vile Patina”.

Corrosion inhibitors are used in conservation to retard corrosion reactions. Benzotriazole (BTA) is the most commonly used inhibitor in conservation of copper and copper alloys. Corrosion inhibitors are substances applied to the surface of metal so as to retard the corrosion process by altering the properties of the metal’s surface. Inhibitors are substances that inhibit one or more of the corrosion processes on metal.

Inhibitor compounds are adsorbed to the surface of the metal. Compounds such as BTA polymerize. This polymer should result in a corrosion inhibiting polymer film over the copper substrate. BTA has been widely accepted in the stabilization of copper and copper alloys to provide this protection.

We use 3mm thick ACM panels to provide the most durable, rigid, and long-lasting support for your art. ACM panels do not react to relative humidity and other environmental changes, providing a very stable support for artwork. For larger sizes up to 5ft by 10ft we use a 6mm thick Gridpanel.

We cut Artefex ACM panels to standard sizes but we also cut custom panels in any shape or size you don’t see above.

Finally we inspect and stamp every panel before sending it to you. This stamp represents an insurance policy not just for artists but for collectors. Your artwork is safe on an Artefex panel for generations.

FAQ’s

Can I paint with oils on an Acrylic Ground?

The basic rule is that you can paint with oils on Acryclic grounds but you can’t paint with Acrylics on an Oil ground.

Do I have to varnish my oil paintings when working on these panels?

We recommend you varnish all oil paintings. It is important to to wait at least 6 months before varnishing, as it takes at least that long for oil paintings to dry. If you varnish, you will protect your art from the back and the front, ensuring your artwork has the best chance to stand the test of time.

Can I just paint directly on Aluminum?

We do not recommend painting directly on unprimed aluminum. Think of your aluminum panels as the stretcher bars on traditional stretched canvas. Its what supports the surface you paint on, not the painting surface itself.

Are the panels rigid at large sizes?

3mm ACM Panels are rigid up to 24 inches but are less rigid at larger sizes making them ideal for smaller art works. 4mm Copper Panels are rigid up to 36 Inches but can be made as large as 48×96 inches. 6mm Honeycomb panels are very rigid at even the largest sizes. In addition they are 60% lighter than a 3mm panel making them ideal for extra large works of art. Gallery panels are made with 3mm panels. Their unique design reinforces the panels in a way that makes them very rigid even at extra large sizes!

Do these panels get heavy at larger sizes?

3mm panel weighs 2.85grams/square inch (0.1 oz) 4mm panel weighs 4.9 grams/ square inch (0.17 oz) 6mm Honeycomb panel weighs 1.71 grams/square inch (0.06 oz), Gallery panel weighs weighs 3.6 grams/square inch (3.7 oz) Even the copper panels are relatively light. The lightest, 6mm honeycomb panels are by far the lightest panels standing at 19lbs for a huge 4’x8′ panel!

How do you hang or frame these panels?

There is a wide range of ways of presenting your artwork. Most commonly artist frame these panels. Though that is the most common presentation we offer a couple other options. Below you will find two hanging systems that we offer, C channel hanging system and the click on hanging system. Both are great for, the 3mm, 4mm and 6mm panels. The gallery panel comes with its own hanging system that you can hang on a wire.
