Q1: What does "Unprimed" mean, and what finishes are on this panel?
This panel is completely raw and unprimed, featuring no canvas or pre-applied grounds. It is double-sided, coated on one side with a protective white polyester coil-coating finish and a polished mill (raw aluminum) finish on the other side [1]. This gives artists a highly stable, non-reactive metal support to apply custom grounds, gesso, or mounting adhesives directly to the panel.
Q2: What is the benefit of the 6mm Honeycomb core for an 18x24" panel?
Our 6mm profile features an aerospace-grade aluminum honeycomb core laminated between two rigid sheets of aluminum. It provides immense structural rigidity that completely prevents bowing or flexing—even under heavy, wet mediums or tension. It is specifically designed to be ultra-lightweight, coming in at 60% lighter than a cradled wood support of the same size [2], while remaining completely warp-proof.
Q3: How do I prepare the raw surfaces of this panel before I begin painting?
Because both the white polyester coil-coated side and the raw mill-finish side are very smooth and non-porous, they lack "tooth" for paint adhesion. To paint on them, you must prepare the surface first. We highly recommend lightly sanding the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to create mechanical tooth, wiping it clean with isopropyl alcohol, and then applying a professional primer. You can use an acrylic gesso (excellent for mixed media, acrylics, or oils) or an oil-based lead primer like Rublev Lead Alkyd Ground depending on your medium.
Q4: Can I use this unprimed panel for mixed media, heavy textures, or clay?
Yes, but raw metal is incredibly slick, so wet media or clay can struggle to bond and may pop off as they dry and shrink. To ensure success with mixed media, always degrease the panel with alcohol, scuff it lightly with sandpaper, and apply a high-quality primer or heavy-duty gesso. Pre-priming is crucial to give heavy-bodied mediums and clays a textured substrate they can physically lock onto.
Q5: Does this 6mm panel require framing, and how are the edges finished?
This panel is designed to be framed. Because the 6mm aluminum honeycomb core is exposed on the outer edges, it is left unfinished during manufacturing and is not meant for raw gallery display. Placing the finished piece in a standard frame or deep floater frame provides a clean, professional presentation while keeping your warp-proof artwork safe [3].
